It won’t link up with your favourite DAW – you need to render its output as audio files and import them into your DAW.Ģ) Runner Up: Propellerhead Software’s Reason $400 (Redrum, Kong, Dr Octo Rex & NN-XT sampler) – it is not cheap at around $400 but it packs a considerable punch – due to its ease of use and flexibility! It is also a fully fledged DAW in its own right.

There’s a trial version too.Ĭons: No midi capability – You can’t create midi files with it, you can’t synchronise it to other software and you can’t use a midi controller. Pros: Quick and easy to learn and use – lots of kits included and more available from Acoustica – and you can make your own too simply by dragging and dropping wav and ogg files – Cheap at $40 and easy for beginners to get started to practice programming and create their own audio drum loops. Take your time and try stuff out so you know what you are most comfortable with.īest Commercial Software Drum Machine (for beginners)ġ) Winner: Acoustica Beatcraft $40 (Standalone software program) It’s much easier, cheaper and often free!Ģ Don’t rush into anything. If I had to make a recommendation for a novice drum programmer, I’d say:ġ Stick with software (and use a midi controller if you want). The RX-17 is the winner in the Yamaha category!
RX-17 has some cool percussion sounds and latin patterns – I have owned one since 1987. You just pick a pattern and play it, or record it in.

PSR-2000 sounds good but it comes with a 4 octave keyboard, so it is not very portable and you can’t really easily program it. Yamaha Summary: DD5’s drum sounds are primitive and truncated, RX-17 is basic but usable. So the DR-660 is the winner in the Boss Category. DR-660 offers breadth of sounds and kit types, 16 little drum pads (for use as a midi controller) and a wide selection of patterns too. You will probably prefer the DR-660 due to the realism of its sounds and patterns, and it is 15 years younger too!īoss Summary: DR-110 is easy to program but (arguably) doesn’t sound that great, BR-1180 has better more realistic sounds and midi patterns, but is certainly not the easiest to use to start off with! DR-660 has many more onboard drum sounds (38 kits and 255 drum sounds) than DR-110 and BR-1180 and combines the best of both. As I started to use the DR-660 however, and hook it up with Reason and Kong, I quickly discovered that it is incredibly versatile and it basically wins hands down. I originally awarded it jointly to the DR-660 and the RX-17. It’s was harder to pick an outright winner in the hardware category. Rebirth RB-338 (Doesn’t work inside most DAWs but does have 808 and 909 sounds – you can hook it up with Reason) GTG Drum Sampler II (Not sure if this is still available – Nice sounds and a cool interface – It is a VST plugin that works with Reaper)

Hammerhead Rhythm Station (Doesn’t work with a DAW (no midi) and won’t render files in Vista or Windows 7 on its default setting – but it will if you change it to one of the other two settings ) If you are short of time (and maybe cash), I’ll cut right to the chase here:Ī great sounding Ludwig kit (plus a Hip Hop kit), a whole bunch of midi loops and audio clips you can instantly drag and drop into your DAW, or simply use it as a standalone. So which drum machines are the best and why? Hardware is often available on eBay or Gumtree, so check in there from time to time too.

My intention is to write about these and video them in more detail, so you will get to hear more about what they sound like and see how to program them.
Here’s a list of almost every drum machine I have ever used, what they are like and where you can download them from. I have never owned a Hardware 808 or a 909, but I do access to their software equivalents – Rebirth RB-338 and Hammerhead Rhythm Station. So your mileage may vary! This concentrates on hardware by Boss and Yamaha, and software primarily for Windows, not the Mac, and pretty much excludes stuff for i-Pads and i-Phones (except Rebirth). What is best for you depends upon availability, cost, ease of use and what is most relevant to your needs. If you have used different ones, your opinion may be different from mine.
